THE HILL’S (WERE) ALIVE...

WEDNESDAY JULY 29, 2009

Neutaconkanut Hill is a remarkable eminence in Johnston, and commands a magnificent view of the surrounding cities.  At one time in the 70’s, one may find it hard to believe that it actually was a ski slope.  If anyone would take the liberty (like me) of viewing the bottom of the hill from Plainfield street, one would start to wonder how (or where) any skier(s) would stop. There are three slopes, and the still standing rope towers, complete with the rusty wheels.  One funny entity I did find is at the top of the hill off of Sunset Avenue is Nuetaconkanut Road.  What once was a street, now blocked off by barriers, contains sidewalks and a road, and what once was an active community, is now a desolate environment.
